The Stage Deli closed today after 75 years of being in business on 7th Ave between 54th and 55th

I have some very fond memories of the Stage Deli. I have known people who have worked there, and I can remember sitting in a window seat at the deli early New Year’s morning 1993. I had taken the 6am flight in on that Saturday morning. While my friend and I were enjoying breakfast, the maintenance crews were cleaning up Times Square. There is nothing like being up and out early on a weekend morning in the city. But the funniest part was when the truck and its crew, that were removing the NYPD barricades, tipped one while loading it onto the back of the truck, and it landed squarely on the hood of my buddy’s Z28 Camaro. What were the odds?? I think he is still waiting for his check from the city …. Great memories. Great place. Another delicatessen institution gone. The food and culture are slipping away fast and so are the people who seem to care. There is nothing like the feel of a deli.
